If elected, what are your plans for office?
I will provide leadership in carrying out the mission and vision of the Association. I will make sure our members are heard and their needs are addressed. I will promote the role of the registered dietitian to the public and in Health Care Reform including health promotion and disease prevention.
Give an example of how you successfully led a team to accomplish an objective/goal.
As Chair of the Nutrition Care Process/Standardized Language Committee we were charged with developing the standardized language for the last step of the nutrition care process. This required lengthy discussion, teaching of committee members, and facilitation of a changing paradigm. Members of the committee had to grapple with new ideas and a different way of thinking about the process of nutrition care and how to document what practitioners do in the care setting. The outcome was different than I think any of us expected when we began the process. However, we accomplished our goal and the second edition of the International Dietetics & Nutrition Termiminology Reference Manual was published that included our outcomes.
Describe your most fulfilling leadership experience.
My most fulfilling leadership experience was the year I served as Chair of the Nutrition Care Process/Standardized Language Committee. Committee members were dedicated and willing to risk a new way of thinking. Everyone needed to be able to "think outside the box" because there were no models to follow, we were creating from "scratch". Because of this, we were able to redesign and build on the previous work of the committee. The outcome was a strong standardized language for our profession. One of the fulfilling parts was seeing the changing paradigm happen as we carried out our discussions. Everyone felt comfortable sharing their ideas no matter how different they might be. This is what made the committee so successful.
Identify 3 of your strengths/skills that make you an ideal candidate.
Ability to adapt to changing paradigms.
Ability to facilitate dialogue among strong professionals with different perspectives and reach common ground.
Ability to recognize and focus the components needed for success in reaching goals.
