If elected, what are your plans for office?
I plan to talk the talk and walk the walk. Conversation and debate are crucial as is action. I'm a doer. When I commit myself to a cause, I commit to getting the job done well. In order to be an effective delegate, I will encourage and support involvement of ADA's young members. We are the future of this organization and each one of us ought to be informed and engaged. I hope to empower our young members to be proactive. Proactive in their daily work, their communities and public policy issues. I will ask for the thoughts, concerns, and ideas of our young members and be their voice.
Give an example of how you successfully led a team to accomplish an objective/goal.
The summer before I started graduate school, I accepted a position as an intern at the United Way. In three months, I coordinated and facilitated a two day distribution of school supplies to 1,964 low-income students. With a spectacular supervisor at my side, we held three community events & used local TV/radio to increase community awareness of the initiative. We collaborated with 75 businesses, organizations, and faith communities to collect school supplies and mobilized 285 volunteers to make the initiative a success. It was fulfilling to experience how our community came together for our youth in greatest need.
Describe your most fulfilling leadership experience.
The Delicious & Nutritious Garden - my thesis that transformed into the most rewarding experiences of my professional career so far. It started as a simple idea and officially began around a conference room table at the local YMCA with key stakeholders in the community. From grant writing and curriculum development to gardening, cooking and educating the youth, I had my hands in the soil from start to finish. Most satisfying was how this intervention brought together community leaders and volunteers while simultaneously energizing the YMCA, youth and their families. The program continues because of dedicated volunteers and through collaboration with our county health department, where we have secured funding for future years.
Identify 3 of your strengths/skills that make you an ideal candidate.
1) I am a hard working and dedicated individual. Our profession can only be as strong as our members. It is a professional duty and honor to be involved. I have a great deal to learn, but I am eager to make a difference. 2) Although some may see me as a bit quiet and reserved, I recognize networking and building strong relationships is PRICELESS! I am a team player, I like to both give and receive help. As we know, two minds are better than one. 3) I am passionate about our profession and I want to help others. I love food as many of us do! I hope to reconnect our communities with the food they eat by examing behavior change at the individual level to policy change at the environmental level.
