If elected, what are your plans for office?
Good leaders help an organization be more effective, promote change, and support the professional and personal growth of its members. These are exciting times for ADA as we have more members than ever before and are on the cusp of major healthcare reform in our nation. To take full advantage of these opportunities will require major commitment and skill from future leaders of ADA. As a member of the nominating committee, I look forward to helping develop a strong slate of candidates to achieve ADA's strategic plan and mission, encourage member participation in the voting process, and create a pipeline of future leaders.
Give an example of how you successfully led a team to accomplish an objective/goal.
I had the honor of chairing the planning committee for a national conference for the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs. The process required strong organizational skills, especially since there was limited staff support. The committee and I created a handbook to serve as a guide for current and future conferences that included time lines, procedures, budget information, and other details required for a successful event. Committee members were assigned responsibilities according to their interest and expertise. Regular conference calls maintained momentum and assured time lines were met. The conference was well attended, made money and received very positive evaluations from attendees.
Describe your most fulfilling leadership experience.
I am very fortunate to lead a team that provides nutrition services to older adults and serves some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Our work is fulfilling and gratifying on several levels and is the reason I have remained in this position for 19 years. As the department director, I have worked hard to be sure we have the 'right people on the bus' and then empower and support staff so they can provide the best service possible. As a result, we have a program that is well respected by recipients, funders, donors, and peers. I take great pride in the impact our team has on people's lives and their ability to maintain their independence and preserve their dignity.
Identify 3 of your strengths/skills that make you an ideal candidate.
Team player: I have participated on many teams during my professional career and fully understand the need for collaboration. I respect the team concept and pledge to participate fully as a committee member. Results-oriented: This position has a defined outcome that requires focused efforts to achieve. My current job depends on attaining results which range from establishing and meeting budget goals to achieving client outcomes. That experience will help accomplish this committee's objective. Connectedness: Through my interactions with various ADA organizational units and other associations, I have many contacts and networking opportunities that will help identify needs and outstanding candidates for the ADA ballot.
