If elected, what are your plans for office?
I would invite each member to select a role in the Strategic Plan and to participate at their level of interest. As BOD leader, I would seek the wise counsel of those ADA members and staff to direct the Association toward our desirable future. This is a time for rapid change in the world. Our best, educated opinions must be heard both nationally and internationally. We must not be invisible and we must not be silent.
Give an example of how you successfully led a team to accomplish an objective/goal.
Serving as Chair of the Standardized Language Task Force was rewarding. While we had courageous and bright thinkers in the group, we also had a monumental challenge. It was not easy trying to find the common language used! However, we collaborated, we debated, we discussed and we finally came to consensus about the specific, special terminology and definitions to share with educators, practitioners and researchers. Though some were hesitant, many have embraced the standardized language and have found it to simplify their work. Doctors, nurses and other allied health colleagues have not questioned "why" but have supported our unique language and procedures.
Describe your most fulfilling leadership experience.
I truly enjoyed starting a 5-county WIC program in Pennsylvania. It was marvelous to hire and train the staff, watching them grow and develop. Many of the staff are still in those jobs after several decades! The idealistic and progressive thinking in that agency allowed me to learn hands-on management and leadership skills. Prior to that time, I had only considered managers as rule makers. Being a leader allowed me to gain insight into the capacity of every person to make a difference in the world.
Identify 3 of your strengths/skills that make you an ideal candidate.
Persevering, collaborative, big picture thinker
